*** Celebrating more than 40 years manufacturing & servicing High Quality Vector Instruments Anemometers and Windvanes at Windspeed Ltd ***
Obtaining the highest accuracy wind speed measurements
In order to obtain the highest accuracy wind speed measurements, we have the following recommendations:

    1) Use an anemometer which has been classified to IEC 61400-12-1, and operate within the parameters stated in the report (turbulence intensity, slope of terrain, and allow for low temperatures).

The following Vector Instruments anemometers have all been classified "class 1" (1.7S) under the guidelines current at the time of writing...
  • A100 Porton Anemometer
  • A100L2 Low Power Anemometer
  • A100K Pulse Output Anemometer
  • A100LK Low Power Pulse Output

  • Note:
The pulse output signal is the most accurate output available from the anemometers mentioned above. Where an analogue output signal is also available from the anemometer, we recommend that the analogue signal should not be used. This is because the circuits converting the main pulse signal to an analogue signal may be subject to additional errors such as drift and change with ambient temperature.

    2) Obtain a wind tunnel calibration (for each anemometer/rotor pair) according to IEC61400-12-1 or IEA 11 by a MEASNET certified laboratory for the windspeed range of interest for the application. The 4-16m/s speed range is normally specified for applications in the windpower industry,

    3) Because there is a change in calibration depending on the method of mounting used, we recommend using our standard type 405 mount in conjunction with a 1.00 inch (25.4mm diameter) mast-top both in the wind tunnel and in the field. Calibrations should always be performed with a mounting arrangement representative of that which will be used in the field. Also refer to IEC 61400-121 "Wind Turbine Power Performance Testing" for a suitable design of boom/mast. The older IEA-11 document contains similar advice.

    4) If an anti-icing heater is necessary, use an internal heater type (such as our /HE4 heater option) which does not affect the outer shape/profile of the instrument. If it is absolutely necessary to fit an external anti-icing heater (e.g. our type /HE1 or /HE2), the calibration should be done with the heater fitted/oriented for the wind direction expected; this is because asymmetry of the external heater causes wind speed calibration to vary by approx. 1% according to wind direction.

    5) Marine (/WR) versions of our anemometers are NOT recommended for applications requiring the highest accuracy (as /WR types use a different rotor/hub design).

    6) In all cases, please contact our sales office and provide full information about your specific requirements. Our sales staff will be happy to provide further advice and information to assist you in your selection of the instruments, options and mounting hardware necessary to achieve the best results for your particular application.
