Instrument connections/wiring:
Please contact our sales office (details at the bottom of this page) if you require assistance with instrument connections/wiring, calibration information (e.g. slope/offset), copies of manuals, or any other assistance with any instrument you have purchased from us.

Cables are fitted to "Vector Instruments" anemometers and windvanes at the time they are manufactured, and cannot be changed without disassembling the instruments (invalidating the warranty and any calibration). Cables can be fitted during manufacture/repair which are as long as 115m (377ft), which is sufficient for the tallest masts/towers in use today.

Some other anemometer/windvane manufacturers allow customers to supply/fit their own cables to instruments (connect at base of instrument), or have a connector in the base of the instrument (to which a customer supplied cable/connector can be fitted), however our long experience has shown that "junction-boxes", "terminals" or "connectors" can be expensive and unreliable... they are certainly expensive to fix if they fail or become intermittent while at the top of a tall mast/tower during a measuring campaign. The cable quality/fitting is an important factor in instrument reliability.

The majority of our customers prefer cables of the appropriate length to be fitted at the time an instrument is manufactured/serviced to maximize reliability. It is however possible (with the right skills) to make a reliable, low-cost, weatherproof joint/splice (e.g. using our CJK1 kit) to extend a shorter cable to the length required, or we can fit any length of cable required if an instrument is returned to us for repair/refurbishment/recalibration.

Any cable used to extend instrument cables should be of a similar specification to the original factory fitted type, otherwise CE-Mark certification and warranty may be compromised, and/or the signal seen by the datalogger may be degraded/unreliable (DEF-STAN 61-12 part 4, 7/0.2mm PVC insulated tinned/stranded conductors [approx 24AWG], overall tinned-braid/shield [>70% coverage] and UV resistant PVC outer jacket: types 7-2-4C, 7-2-6C or 7-2-8C for 4,6 and 8 core types respectively).

For details of interfacing to a datalogger, you should refer to the datalogger manual and/or contact the datalogger manufacturer for advice.

For best reliability when installing instrument cables: Ensure that cables aren't nicked/cut/scuffed or twisted/kinked during installation. Make sure cables don't press/rub on any rough surfaces or sharp objects/edges. Ensure cables are secured so that there is not excessive "slack" or movement/flexing. Ensure cables won't be subject to chafing/stretching as the mast/tower flexes/sways or expands.

To avoid problems with electrical noise/interference (EMI/EMC/ESD): Ensure that the cable and shield/braid are properly connected, and instrument is properly grounded/earthed. Do not install cables close to radio/TV/radar antennae (wind instruments should be well away from such objects to obtains valid/representative wind measurements anyway) or RF transmitters and cables. Do not operate mobile phones or other radio equipment in close proximity to the anemometer/cable. Maintain adequate separation between sensor/signal cables and power cables. Never run signal and power wires in the same conduit/tray/bundle. Install Ferrite Beads/Sleeves on signal wires close to the measuring equipment if EMC problems persist.
